What is a weather window for sailing?
A weather window is a stretch of favorable weather (wind, seas, and visibility within safe limits for your boat and crew) that lasts long enough to make a passage safely and comfortably. It covers the entire passage.
The catch: a window is not a single forecast at your berth. It is a question about what the weather will be doing where your boat actually is, hour by hour, for the length of the trip. A window is favorable weather that outlasts your passage.
A weather window opens when the forecast says conditions will stay within your boat's and crew's limits (for wind, sea state, and visibility) for long enough to complete the passage with a margin to spare.
That definition hides the hard part. "Within limits" depends on your hull, your crew, and your route. "Long enough" depends on how far you're going and how fast you sail. And the forecast has to hold not just now, but at each point along the way, at the hour you'll be there. Finding a window is the process of answering all three at once.
Six things that decide whether a window is favorable.
A good window is the overlap of all six, assessed along the entire route, not at a single point.
- Wind speed and angle: A favorable window keeps wind inside your boat's comfortable range and off the bow. Always read the gust forecast, not just the average, since the gusts are what test the boat and crew.
- Sea state, height, period and direction: Wave height alone tells you little. What matters is height relative to period and the direction the seas come from. A long-period swell on the beam can be comfortable; a short-period or confused cross-sea at the same height is punishing.
- Squall and convective risk: A line of squalls can turn an otherwise benign forecast into a rough, even dangerous, day. A clean window is low on convective and lightning risk along the route, not just at the start.
- Duration and margin: The window has to be longer than the passage. You want settled conditions the day before you depart, throughout the passage itself, and a spare day after your planned arrival in case the next system arrives early or you sail slower than planned.
- Forecast confidence: A window you can trust is one several models agree on. When models diverge, the window is uncertain: widen your margins, or wait for the next forecast update.
- Fuel and range: Sailing is usually the plan, but motoring is the backup. A favorable window still leaves you enough fuel, with reserve, to motor through calms, keep to your schedule, or divert to shelter if the wind quits.
Wave height alone is a trap. Watch the period.
The single most useful sea-state check is the ratio of wave period (in seconds) to wave height (in feet). Two forecasts with the same height can be a different passage entirely.

Then check the wave direction. Seas on the beam or quarter are far kinder than the same seas on the nose, and your own heading and speed change the angle and frequency at which you meet them. A separate swell crossing the wind-waves can also stack into something neither number predicts on its own, so always read wind, swell, and wind-wave together.
The window has to outlast the passage, with margin.
Plan for the time you expect to be out plus unforeseen time. A one-day hop often needs a three-day window: a settled day before the departure date, a day during the passage itself, and a spare day in case weather arrives early or you're sailing too slow.
- Spot the trend: 5–7+ days out, look for a settled pattern forming, not exact numbers yet, just whether a window is plausible.
- Commit in the 48–120 h zone: Two to five days out is where you decide. Single deterministic models are most reliable from roughly 1–3 days, so this is when you can commit with confidence.
- Confirm the day before: Check that the window is still holding and hasn't shortened. Begin final prep contingent on the departure-day check.
- Re-check underway: Windows can close even after you leave. Re-assess roughly every 12 hours as new forecasts land, know your abort criteria, and keep a list of bail-out ports/anchorages ready.
